Arctostaphylos uva-ursi  (Uva-Ursi)

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi commonly known as Uva-Ursi or Bearberry prefer to grow in dry sandy soils and is native to the Northern hemisphere.1 Uva-ursi grows as a low evergreen shrub, producing bright red small berries with dark green leaves, and bell-shaped pink flowers.
 
Discovered in the 13th century by Welsh Physicians and then in the 17th century by German physicians, the berries were widely used in medicinal practice.3 Native Americans also used the leaves of the plant in combination with tobacco for smoking.2
 
Uva-ursi is a strong urinary antiseptic and used to treat both kidney and bladder infections, particularly in interstitial cystitis, pyelonephritis, urinary tract infections and for urethritis.4  The herb, has been widely studied for its ability to soothe irritated urinary tissue and membranes, as well as it’s antibacterial effect.5 It has also been found to assist in cases of urinary incontinence.5 Additionally, uva-ursi can be used to treat has respiratory conditions such as bronchitis.3
