Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Uva-Ursi)

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi commonly known as Uva-Ursi or Bearberry prefer to grow in dry sandy soils and is native to the Northern hemisphere.¹ Uva-ursi grows as a low evergreen shrub, producing bright red small berries with dark green leaves, and bell-shaped pink flowers.²

Discovered in the 13th century by Welsh Physicians and then in the 17th century by German physicians, the berries were widely used in medicinal practice.³ Native Americans also used the leaves of the plant in combination with tobacco for smoking.²

Uva-ursi is a strong urinary antiseptic and used to treat both kidney and bladder infections, particularly in interstitial cystitis, pyelonephritis, urinary tract infections and for urethritis.⁴ The herb, has been widely studied for its ability to soothe irritated urinary tissue and membranes, as well as it’s antibacterial effect.⁵ It has also been found to assist in cases of urinary incontinence.⁵ Additionally, uva-ursi can be used to treat has respiratory conditions such as bronchitis.³
