Trametes versicolor (Coriolus versicolor)

Turkey tails, also known as trametes versicolor or coriolus versicolor, is a mushroom originally found to grow in Asia and now grows all over the globe. The multi-colored cap resembles the colors of a turkey tail, displaying colors of brown, blue, white and grey on it’s outside cap. The underside of the top is white with small pores.1

Historically, turkey tails mushroom was used in Chinese medicine to increase one’s energy and assist with increasing the vitality of those experiencing chronic diseases.  In Mexican folk medicine, the fungus was used to treat a vast array of skin ailments, particularly with impetigo and ringworm.1

In vitro clinical studies have found trametes versicolor to have high immunoprotection and antiviral activity, and hence is used to strengthen the immune system in certain immunological conditions. It is also known for it’s interferon activity with cell receptors, and as a result is known to improve the quality of life of those experiencing certain conditions.1,2,3

It was also found that a glycoprotein extracted from the mycelium of the fungus inhibits blood platelet aggravation and may be used in cases of hypertension, diabetes, rheumatic conditions as well as cases of thrombosis. Additionally, coriolus was studied to assist with nephrotic conditions such as glomerulonephritis and specifically with conditions involving proteinuria.1
