Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice Root)

Glycyrrhiza glabra also known as Licorice, is grown worldwide in temperate zone regions, they grow as woody perennials up to 2 m tall, with pinnate leaves, cream colored flowers and fruit pods.1  
Historically licorice root was used to relieve coughs and to prevent thirst in dropsy.2 It was also used to treat a wide array of digestive conditions such as peptic ulcers, abdominal pain and in certain infections such as malaria. Licorice root was known for relieving various health related concerns including asthma, pharyngitis and insomnia.3 From a historical Ayurvedic standpoint, licorice root was known to aid in treating eye diseases, throat infections, peptic ulcers, constipation and arthritis.4 
Clinically licorice root is known for relieving various gastrointestinal concerns including peptic ulcers, constipation, gastritis, gastrointestinal reflux, and for treating respiratory conditions including bronchitis, asthma and coughs. Licorice root can also be used to treat Addison’s disease, cases of adrenal depletion and those under chronic stress due to its actions as an adrenal tonic. Moreover, recent research has found it to aid in female gynecological concerns such as infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome and cystitis.5
